Amici and Janosz Crowned Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Champions at Vallelunga
Vallelunga / Hong Kong, 19 Nov, 2018 – Andrea Amici and Artur Janosz were crowned the 2018 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Pro champions, with FFF Racing Team by ACM also wrapping up the team title and finishing runner-up in championship with the sister car of Jack Bartholomew and James Pull. Following a season-long battle for the Pro-Am title, Leipert Motorsport’s Mikko Eskelinen and Juuso Puhakka emerged victorious to win the category title. Bobby Buncharoen of True Visions Motorsports Thailand won the Amateur category, while 852 Challengers’ Paul Wong celebrated the Lamborghini Cup title.
With the first five race weekends held across Asia, the championship moved to Italy for the final double-header of the 2018 season. The two Vallelunga races were both held on Friday ahead of the weekend’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final. Both races were held together with the Lamborghini Super Trofeo USA with plenty of battles throughout the bumper field.
While Amici and Janosz celebrated their title win, it was the Clazzio Racing pairing of Kei Cozzolino and Afiq Yazid who took top honours in each of the two races. Having joined the series mid-season, the 2017 Pro champions finished fourth overall in this year’s Pro category, one behind Ben Gersekowski of Leipert Motorsport.
In the opening race, Cozzolino led the field from pole position, with Muscat alongside him and Pull and Takeshi Matsumoto of Hojust Racing making up the second row. Cozzolino made a clean getaway and began to try to pull away from his rivals. From the back of the grid, Amici began to drive his way through the field, determined to make-up for an incident in free practice that forced the team to miss qualifying. By the end of the opening lap, Amici was up to sixth. As Cozzolino pulled away, the battle for second between Muscat and Pull intensified.
After the pit window closed, Yazid, who took over from Cozzolino, continued to lead the field, opening up a more than 13 second gap by the chequered flag. In the closing stages of the race, Gersekowski, who had been running second, was forced to retire prematurely, promoting Bartholomew in the no. 219 car into second and Jansoz into third position. Eskelinen and Puhakka were the top Pro-Am team and finished fourth overall, while Takamichi Matsuda and Daijiro Yoshihara of YH Racing Team won the Lamborghini Cup ahead of GDL Racing Team’s Gabriele Murroni.
In the final race of the season, Yazid started from pole, ahead of Puhakka, Gama Racing’s Evan Chen and Gersekowski. Yazid and Cozzolino took their fifth victory of the season, taking the chequered flag by 2.916 seconds ahead of Gersekowski and Muscat. Matsumoto and Ochiai concluded their season with a Pro-Am class win, while Murroni won the final race of the competitive Lamborghini Cup ahead of Matsuda and Yoshihara, and Wong who finished third.
With the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia season concluded, attention is now on the weekend’s electrifying World Final, which brings together the drivers and teams from the Asian, American and European series.
